If you are planning to cruise within Europe and the Mediterranean the RYA and MCA recommends Skippers to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). Any candidate who wishes to be endorsed for operation on inland waterways requires the CEVNI test. This is a multiple choice paper that can be taken at the same time as the ICC exam. New rules introduced in January 2005 mean that if a powerboat school tests you or the boat used is of 10m or less you can only be certified up to 10m. For motor cruisers over 10m you will be certified up to 24m either on your own boat or our Training Centres F44 motor cruiser, "Dark Angel" This qualification is only available to BRITISH CITIZENS or bona fide BRITISH RESIDENTS, and is valid for British flagged vessels only. There are 3 ways to obtain an ICC valid for power vessels between 10m and 24m:

While we are happy to use your boat to complete the course of your choice, we reserve the right to refuse to operate on any vessel we deem unfit for the intended purpose and/or does not reach the basic safety equipment standards for the proposed area of operation. As a guide all vessels should carry flares, life jackets (with lights if operating at night), basic first aid kit, foghorn, a horse shoe buoy (or equivalent) and a set of wooden bungs. Vessel operating outside The Solent must carry a suitable liferaft, radar reflector & handheld VHF. Our Instructors will carry some of this equipment so don't worry if you do not have it all yet. However the equipment we are suggesting is a sensible minimum. If you need help obtaining and fitting this equipment follow this link to our safety equipment pages. We can cater for all your safety requirements from rowing boats to ocean going liners. |
